THE SKY’S THE LIMIT AT LEROO LA TAU

The sky’s the limit at Leroo La Tau, where epic experiences await in every season.

Perched on the western bank of the Boteti River—a vital lifeline for wildlife—Leroo La Tau is where you can stroll from your bed to your private deck or to the photographic hide to see incredible wildlife, including one of Botswana’s greatest spectacles, the dazzling annual zebra migration. It is where the unimaginable unfolds right before your eyes, without needing to travel far.

What sets Leroo La Tau apart is that it’s both a haven of sustainable luxury and on-site game viewing and a launchpad for life-changing activities. The Boteti River also forms the boundary of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, where we guide you to experience the region’s most extraordinary wonders, from the greatest collection of salt pans on Earth to the mighty Baines’ Baobabs and more.

Heli Transfers from Leroo to the Salt Pan Sleep-Out

1. The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans Sleep-Out (3-Night Stays):

An overnight adventure with the option to add scenic helicopter transfers in place of game vehicle transfers (one-way or return; surcharges apply for heli transfers). Available mid-June to October, weather permitting and availability dependent. For those who prefer not to stay overnight but still want to witness the beauty of the pans, a day trip to Nxai Pan offers an unforgettable journey. Nxai Pan trips also serve as a great alternative when weather conditions are unfavourable for the Sleep-Out or if the Sleep-Out has reached capacity.

Picture an endless stretch of flat salt, all the way to the horizon—a surreal, lunar-like environment that captivates the senses. As the sun sets, the sky transforms into a vibrant canvas of burnt orange, periwinkle, and pink—the kind of African sunset that dreams are made of.

The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans are so remote that both sound and light pollution are non-existent, an experience described by many as life-changing. This is where we bring you for our iconic Makgadikgadi Salt Pans Sleep-Out Experience.

To get there, you’ll hit the road in a game vehicle from Leroo La Tau to sleep under the stars, dine around a campfire, and revel in the profound solitude of nature. All logistics, including bedrolls, meals, and transport, are handled by our team. The Sleep-Out is guided expertly, with safety a top priority for all.

2. The Ultimate Makgadikgadi Salt Pans Adventure (Epic Experience):

An overnight adventure with inclusive return helicopter transfers, absolute exclusivity at the Sleep-Out site, private guiding, a guided adventure at Kubu Island, and the chance to witness the zebra migration from above. Available mid-June to October. Booking this Epic Experience itinerary guarantees availability and total privacy. All itinerary element costs are covered in your overall booking, offering incredible value.

What is an Epic Experience itinerary? Epic Experiences is a newly introduced collection of mini-packages designed for travellers who love the journey and the destination. They bring you to hidden gems and ancient sites, offer authentic connections with local communities and minimise distractions while focusing on exclusivity. These packages are completely customisable and can be added to any Botswana Safari.

Embarking on this journey as an Epic Experience adds incredible value, including a private, personalised Salt Pans Sleep-Out guided by a specialist, as well as scenic helicopter transfers.

It also offers aerial views of two of Botswana’s most iconic spectacles (June–October): the unmissable Zebra Migration and a once-in-a-lifetime Sleep-Out beneath the vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans’ starlit skies. This itinerary also includes a helicopter flight to the mystical Kubu Island—a sacred oasis on the eastern edge of the pans.

A Few Package Highlights:

  • Spend three unforgettable nights at Leroo La Tau.
  • Enjoy a privately guided experience led by expert Desert & Delta Safaris guides.

3. Kubu Island: A Hidden Makgadikgadi Gem (Day Trip)

A 60-minute flight over the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans with an exciting guided adventure at Kubu Island. Available year-round, with flamingo viewing dependent on weather and breeding patterns. Surcharges apply. Guests staying three-nights or more, and who are taking part in the Salt Pans Sleep-Out experience, can add a Kubu Island stop to the journey at an added cost.

For the ultimate Makgadikgadi Pans scenic flight, take to the skies and journey across the vast salt flats toward the enchanting Kubu Island. Here, ancient Gondwanaland rocks, archaeological remnants, and towering mystical baobabs create one of Africa’s most breathtaking landscapes.

After taking in the island’s beauty, your pilot will fly south in search of flamingo flocks and their remote nesting sites—virtually inaccessible by any means other than air. During peak season, these shimmering pink gatherings can number in the tens of thousands, making this region one of Africa’s most vital breeding grounds for both lesser and greater flamingos. Their movements shift each year in response to rainfall, typically occurring between February and July. If seeing these flamingos is on your bucket list, it’s important to contact our team to discuss seasonality.

4. Nxai Pans: Home of the Mighty Baines’ Baobabs (Day Trip)

A 60-minute flight over the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, landing at Nxai Pans. This journey is available year-round and is particularly stunning between November and April, when seasonal rains typically arrive and the floodplains burst into verdant greens and wildlife flock to drink and graze. Surcharges apply when booked as a helicopter adventure.

Nxai Pan, part of the greater Makgadikgadi Pans system, is a vast fossil lakebed. One of the most iconic landmarks of this area is Baines’ Baobabs—a cluster of ancient, towering baobab trees made famous by explorer and artist Thomas Baines in 1862. These colossal, gnarled giants have stood for centuries, their striking silhouettes casting dramatic shadows over the stark, open landscape.

During the rainy season, the pan transforms into a lush oasis, attracting large herds of zebras, elephants, giraffes, and predators like lions and cheetahs—an incredible aerial site from a helicopter.

5. Stripes from the Sky: Botswana’s Zebra Migration

A 30-minute helicopter flight over the Boteti River to witness the zebra migration from above. Surcharges apply. Zebras typically start arriving in massive numbers at Leroo La Tau from April/May, depending on seasonal rains, with reliable viewing months continuing until around October.

Typically from May, thousands of zebras arrive at Leroo La Tau’s doorstep, drawn to the life-giving waters of the Boteti River. This breathtaking spectacle of black-and-white stripes is made even more magical by Africa’s legendary orange sunsets, illuminating the dust kicked up by countless hooves. Witness the action up close from our lodge’s photographic hide, or take to the skies for a bird’s-eye view, where the sheer scale of the migration unfolds in all its grandeur.
